Goalscorers – Jack Wickens (2), Ryan Davis (5), Jack Barrett (10, 17), Chris Bell (23, 50), Jordan Goddard (39 pen, 60) Newbury’s first outing in the Oxford Mail Boys League proved more successful than expected with their opponents, Wantage Concords, being largely made up from last year’s league winners.

Newbury started off strongly moving forward with skill and tenacity and it took just 2 minutes for Jack Wickens to open the scoring when he converted a ball that found its way into the box through quick and accurate passing amongst the whole forward line. 3 minutes after that Ryan Davis converted a Kieron Conway pass in from the left to make it two. It was a further 5 minutes before Jack Barrett picked up the ball on the right wing and shot from 25 yards out to make it three.

In the 13th minute Newbury were caught out by a through ball from Wantage which was pounced on by their forward and converted and Newbury then endured a period of attack from Wantage until they corrected the defensive errors to contain them.

In the 17th minute, Jack Barrett converted a Jack Wickens cross to make it 1-4 and then in the 23rd minute Chris Bell pounced on a loose ball from the goalie to make it 1-5 at the break.

Wantage came out more determined in the second half and, unfortunately, in the 4th minute of the half brought down Jack Wickens in the box. Jordan Goddard hit the penalty low and hard to make it 1-6.

In the 15th minute of the half, Chris Bell carried the ball to the edge of the area and shot, only to hit the post but was able to collect the loose ball and convert to make it 1-7 and then Jordan Goddard completed the scoring with a long shot from a Sam Barber pass to make it 1-8 at the final whistle.
