OXFORD should go for the status of UK City of Culture if there is a clearly defined financial benefit.
Both Liverpool and Glasgow prospered hugely on the back of winning the European culture title.
The UK title is a watered-down version, but it must carry some benefit and you do need to speculate to accumulate. However, given the city council’s continuing financial restraints, we trust it will stick to leader Bob Price’s pledge to only commit to spending on the project if there is a good likelihood of success.
