THE Leys Fair is back for another year — and promises to be a celebration of young people on the Oxford estate.

The popular community festival is expected to attract more than 4,000 people to the centre of Blackbird Leys tomorrow.

A Celebration of Leys Youth is the theme of this year’s event, which will be held in Blackbird Leys Park.

A range of activities and performances, including dance, rap and music, will highlight the very best of what young people in Leys have to offer, organisers say.

Paul Isaacs, organiser and manager of Blackbird Leys Youth and Community Centre, added: “They have used the summer holidays to work unbelievably hard to present some great displays.

“Leys Fair is a long-standing and very popular carnival event run by the local community and I’m sure that 2009 will keep up this proud tradition.”

Free demonstrations and displays will feature ‘Knife or Life’, the CDI 2009 Crew, and dance, music and art.

A healthy living zone will offer free tips and advice on general well-being. For youngsters, there will also be face painting, bouncy castles, jousting and sumo wrestling.

Neighbourhood police officers, PCSOs, streetwardens and firefighters are attending. Recycling information will also be on offer.

Oxford East MP Andrew Smith urged people to come along.

He said: “It is a great day for the whole community which showcases Blackbird Leys at its very best.

“There will be lots of fun things for the whole family to do, supplied by a whole raft of different people and groups.

“It is all about Blackbird Leys voicing its pride for all the good work in the area.”

Local cheerleading group the Strawberry Fayre Majorettes will entertain visitors and food from across the globe will be available.

Various community organisations and charities will be manning fundraising stalls at the event, which runs from noon to 5.30pm.
