This week’s case contains some of the classic grape varieties that shine when handled well by good winemakers using modern equipment. These rich, ripe wines go very well with a wide variety of food and can also be enjoyed equally well on their own because of their smooth velvety texture.
The Rich ripe reds mixed case costs £71 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines.
Terra Firma Nero D’Avola 2008, Sicily: With notes of red cherry and currant, this wine is soft and succulent with good smooth textured rich fruit — great with rich pasta dishes or casseroles.
Borsao Garnacha 2008, Spain: Always a popular wine because of its deep rich spicy fruit, the garnacha grape variety gives this wine a very soft but ultra fruity style that never fails to satisfy. Good with any red meat dish.
Rio Alto Shiraz 2006, Chile: Rounded with very good fruit definition and that drink-me factor, this wine has deep raspberry fruit, spice and delightful floral aspects that linger on the palate. Great with grilled meat in particular.
Winston Hill Zinfandel 2006, California: Very soft and easy drinking zinfandel with touches of raspberry and spice mingled with subtle touches of woodland berry fruit. Lovely with home-cooked pizza or rich Italian dishes.
