Who makes the best wine – France or the New World wine producers? Some years ago the answer would have been a firm nod towards France, but now winemakers in the New World are making really well-crafted, fruit-driven styles that really shine. And, interestingly, France is now also using modern winemaking methods that produce fruitier wines too – so the choice for everyday wines is harder to make.
The France vs New World mixed case costs £70 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines.
Domaine du Mage Sauvignon Blanc 2008, France: Fresh, clean modern made Sauvignon from the south of France with crisp, grassy fruit and a touch of lemons and limes – delicious!
Welmoed Sauvignon Blanc 2009, South Africa: South Africa makes very French-style Sauvignon and this excellent example from Stellenbosch has clean green fruit with touches of grass, figs and lime – perfect with most fish dishes.
Wild Pig Merlot 2008, France: Modern made French wine that displays bright fruited plum and blackberry flavours with a faint touch of spice. Great with pork or most white meats.
Kintu Merlot 2008, Chile: Chile’s wines go from strength to strength and the prices remain stable and very affordable. This lovely Merlot is smooth with ripe plum and red berry flavours and is a good partner with grilled meats in particular.
