Pinot Grigio (or Gris) comes in many different guises and from many different parts of the world. The Italian wines that we so often see are sometimes not the most interesting examples of what this grape can produce. Here we have included some unusual and delicious wines that don’t come from around Lake Garda — yet have superb fruit and complexity.
The Pinot Grigio mixed case costs £83 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines.
Dry River Pinot Grigio 2008, Australia: An ultra fruity wine from down under, this has loads of citrus blossom, lime and grapefruit alongside green apple and crunchy crisp fruit.
Cleebourg Pinot Gris Prestige 2007, Alsace: Lovers of pinot grigio sometimes overlook wines from the homeland of the grape variety, Alsace. Here the style is more minerally and complex and this delicious wine is no exception.
Villa Wolf Pinot Gris 2007, Germany: Although not normally associated with Germany, this ultra-rich example is made by the famous Ernst Loosen who is undoubtedly one of the very top winemakers in the country. Soft, rich and off dry whilst still being delightfully crisp and refreshing.
Matra Hill Pinot Grigio Blush 2007, Hungary: This late picked rosé style has flavours of cherries, apple and honeysuckle and makes an excellent companion to dried meats and salads.
