Motorists trapped in long tailbacks on the M40 after a car transporter caught fire were given bottles of water to help them cope with today's hot weather.

Firefighters were called to deal with the burning lorry on the southbound carriageway, between junction five at Stokenchurch and junction four at High Wycombe, in Buckinghamshire, at about 1pm.

Both carriageways were closed when some of the cars exploded.

There were knock-on effects as traffic was diverted off the motorway on to surrounding roads and there are reports of long queues on the A40 approaching Oxford, between the Thornhill park-and-ride site and Wheatley, as traffic caught up in the tailbacks on the M40 gets back on the move after the northbound carriageway was partially reopened.

The Highways Agency is handing out water to motorists caught in the jams.

One lane of the southbound carriageway is expected to reopen at about 4.30pm.
