FORGET Jam and Jerusalem — young mums in Didcot were taught how to cook exciting, healthy meals for their children by members of the Women’s Institute.
WI member Graeme Gettings, of Blewbury, near Didcot, taught mothers under 30 how to cook nutritious meals cheaply.
The 57-year-old, pictured right with Stephanie Gifford, said: “The classes were free for mums who weren’t very good or very confident when it came to cooking.”
Mrs Gettings was aided by her husband, along with Blewbury WI members.
She said: “My husband can’t cook, so he trialled the recipes first. And if he could master them — we would give them to the mums.”
Meatball stew and apple crumble were among the recipes taught.
The six-week course took place in Abingdon and at the Sure Start Family Centre in Didcot.
They were funded by the Government after the Food Standards Agency set up the initiative and approached the WI for help. All the mums who took part received a certificate.
