A MAN who saved a pensioner from her burning home and a man who tackled a robber at a cash point were among the people honoured at a special award ceremony.
The gongs were given out at South Oxfordshire Community Safety Partnership first annual volunteer awards, which aim to celebrate the achievements of 15 volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution to community safety.
Ian Thompson, of Didcot, was one of those honoured.
He tackled a robber who was carrying out a robbery at a cash point in the town earlier this year. His baseball ball hat was dislodged in the tussle and was left at the scene, which enabled DNA tests to be carried out.
Barry Tidbury, 31, of Kibble Close, Didcot, was arrested and charged and has since pleaded guilty to robbery and is awaiting sentence.
Lindon Shepherd, of Wallingford, was also nominated after he helped Sheila Smith, 81, during an arson attack on her home in Wood Street, Wallingford, in February.
Mr Shepherd was on his way to work early one morning when he saw the fire and stopped to try and put it out.
Alan Whitten, 46, of Johnstone Place, Wallingford, has been charged with arson, recklessly endangering life and two other counts of arson.
He is awaiting trial.
Supt Amanda Pearson, area commander for South Oxfordshire, said: “These residents give their time selflessly and their efforts help make the partnership the success that it is.”
Jane Murphy, cabinet member for community safety, said: “This awards ceremony is an excellent opportunity to show our appreciation for those who make an exceptional effort to keep our communities safe.”
Presentations were made by the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire Richard Dick.
Freda Griffiths, of Great Western Drive, Didcot, was also recognised. She has been a tenants representative for Soha housing association for more than five years and is a member of the local Neighbourhood Action Group.
She was joined by Revd Keith Nichol, of Didcot, who has worked on behalf of youth charity Didcot Train, bidding for funding for the youth outreach post and worked to set up the post.
