A MOTHER from Cowley is hoping to make some dough by selling her home-baked bread in nearby shops.
Trudy Ebede, 53, of Barns Road has been producing ‘Aunty Trudy’s Bread’ — a secret, Nigerian-inspired recipe — for more than 35 years.
The secret recipe for the delicious loaf has been passed down to Mrs Ebede from her mother.
Now, thanks to the demand from people who have tasted the loaf, it is to go general sale for the first time, priced £1.50.
Aunty Trudy’s Bread is available in shops in Bar’s Road, Cowley Road and Blackbird Leys.
Last night, Mrs Ebede said: “It’s a family recipe and I have cooked it for as long as I can remember.
“My mother developed the recipe, we just added bits here and there and it worked.
“The African people who have tasted it say it reminds them of home.”
The closely-guarded recipe has since been passed on to her 24-year-old daughter, Jasmine.
Mrs Ebede, who was raised in England but is of Nigerian decent, described the bread as an “African brioche”, and similar to traditional Nigerian bread.
The bread became famous throughout the Oxford estates due to Mrs Ebede’s generosity.
She said: “We operate an open house policy.
“I make the bread every Sunday and people visit knowing they can go home with a loaf. It’s become part of who I am.”
The idea the bread could be a new and exciting business venture for Mrs Ebede and her husband Christian, 55, came to her after she was approached by a man asking for some of her bread.
She said: “Word spreads, people approach you. One even said he would be willing to pay for it.
“To me it’s just bread, I have been making it for years, but other people really enjoy it.”
Aunty Trudy’s Bread will be the newest venture in Mr and Mrs Ebede’s growing business group, which already consists of a cleaning company, a security company and a soon-to-open chip shop.
Due to the high demand for the bread, Mrs Ebede has passed production over to a master baker who can satisfy the demand for a hundred loaves every week.
Mrs Ebede, who insisted the bread tastes exactly the same as her home-baked version, said: “He has done the recipe as I would at home. We did a blindfold test and it tasted exactly the same as mine.”
