REGULARS at an Oxford pub were given a surprise when a senior Jamaican politician walked up to the bar.
Delroy Chuck, Speaker of the country’s House of Representatives, visited the Blackbird pub, in Blackbird Leys, after being invited to pop in for a drink.
Landlord Glen Williams, 64, said: “It meant a lot to have him here.
“I’m Jamaican like him, and to have somebody here of his calibre was very good for the local black community.”
Mr Chuck said: “It was nice to see the Jamaican and English communities so well integrated. It was good to see everyone communicating and engaging in community spirit.”
The 58-year-old politican, above, left, enjoying a beer while talking to Mr Williams, studied at Oxford University’s St Catherine’s College in the 1970s, and is in the city to attend a graduates’ reunion dinner this weekend.
He also visited London to find out about the role of the new Speaker at the House of Commons, John Bercow.
He plans to remain in Oxford until Monday, during which time he said he would revisit the pub.
