A FILM festival of award-winning work by people with learning disabilities will be held in Oxford.
The Winning Ticket Film Show, an art, photography and film festival marking national Learning Disability Awareness week, takes place at Barton Neighbourhood Centre, Underhill Circus, from 1pm on Wednesday.
The winning entries include a self-portrait by 27-year-old photographer Aron Whitehouse. He campaigned against parking outside his home in Ferry Road, blocking access for the bus that collected him for college.
Mr Whitehouse, who has cerebral palsy, was one of three Oxfordshire artists to win a bronze medal at SNAP! – a national competition run by Mencap – and will receive a new camera.
The films include Care About Racism, which deals with the racist behaviour of some people with learning disabilities against their carers, and won the Best Drama award at Oxford’s 2008 Flash Forward Film Festival.
Organiser Grey Burdick said: “People with learning disabilities are using film and photography to say something important about their lives.”
