PLANS for a new Oxford-to-London rail route, which would include improvements to the Bicester-to-Oxford line, have been welcomed by Cherwell District Council’s executive.
The new service, which could be launched within four years, would involve the line to Oxford being upgraded from a single to a double track and new safety and signalling systems installed.
Bicester Town and Islip stations would be upgraded and a new parkway station provided at Water Eaton.
At Cherwell’s executive meeting on Monday, planning and housing chief Michael Gibbard praised the initial proposals.
Mr Gibbard said: “Ensuring that Cherwell is a district of opportunity is a key priority of the council and we recognise the opportunities that this development can bring for Bicester, the district, and Oxfordshire as a whole.
“This is an ambitious plan but we need to make sure any concerns from residents are heard, especially in relation to road crossings.
“An improved rail link between Oxford and Bicester would provide a welcome eco-friendly transport option that could take cars off the roads. The proposed link from this line to the Marylebone line improves links to both London and Birmingham – essential for bringing businesses to the area.”
The scheme is being put forward by Chiltern Railways and a public meeting is to be staged on Thursday, June 25, where liaison manager John Horsman will address visitors at the Methodist Church Hall, Sheep Street, from 7pm.
The Thames Valley branch of Railfuture will host the meeting. All are welcome.
