WHEN Doug Tew joined the RAF, he was not sure if he would ever see his childhood friend Mollie Wolstenholme again.
But a chance meeting while on leave signalled a second chance for the couple — who celebrated their diamond wedding on Tuesday.
Mr and Mrs Tew, above, now 85 and 82 respectively, were both born in Cruise Road, Sheffield, and grew up together for the first 15 years of their lives.
Mr Tew left in 1941 to join the Royal Air Force, but it was not until 1947 that he was reunited with his future wife.
He said: “I was under a car at the time and I saw these legs walk past me and they looked quite nice. I came out from under the car and said ‘it’s Mollie Wolstenholme’.”
The couple were married in Ranmoor Church, Sheffield, on June 16, 1949.
They moved to Garner Close, Carterton, 19 years ago, and have two children — Helen 59, and Sheila, 54 — and four grandchildren.
