DINERS are being warned over “unacceptable” food hygiene at 72 Oxfordshire restaurants, pubs, bars, and takeaways.
We reported on the launch of the scheme in the county last week and yesterday website scoresonthedoors.org.uk went online with details of food hygiene inspections.
It shows 21 outlets in Oxford and 51 in the rest of the county were judged to have “very poor” kitchen hygiene standards and failed to get a single star in the five-star rating system.
The decision to publish the information online was criticised by the owners of some Oxford food outlets, who argued the ratings were out of date.
The Royal Blenheim pub, in St Ebbe’s Street, was inspected last July. Landlady Sara Liddle took over in October and said the score did not reflect her kitchen’s hygiene standards.
Mrs Liddle, who has been in the pub trade 16 years, said : “It’s false information.” She added: “Zero is completely unfair on what we have done with the pub since we have been here.”
The system has also been questioned by the head chef at the Fishes pub, in North Hinksey, which got two stars when inspected in April last year.
Chef Gavin Allcock said: “I think people should keep an open mind about this, this doesn’t judge you on what the actual standards of cleanliness are, it is just a snapshot of how things were on one day.”
City council staff visited 860 premises in the past two years, assessing kitchens for food hygiene, structural safety and confidence in the management.
Overall, 73 premises scored top marks. All those with a zero score were given a written warning or an enforcement notice to improve or face court action.
Among those without a star was the Oisi Master Sushi Bar, in St Clement’s, which was shut down in May after the Health Protection Agency notified the council of two cases of food poisoning linked to the restaurant.
Council health development manager Ian Wright said: “Those premises at the bottom have given us cause for concern. We’re working with the businesses to drag the ratings up.”
New owners must register with the council, which will trigger a fresh inspection.
Environmental health officer Richard Kuziara said: “These are very thorough inspections. Since we have been doing them, we have noticed an improvement across the city.”
