A CITY nightclub has been ordered to close after a woman was glassed in the face — a year after it agreed to replace all glass with plastic.
Oxford City Council’s licensing committee today revoked the licence at Mood Music Cocktail Bar, George Street.
The hearing was told 32 crimes had been committed at the club since its last review and a woman was glassed in the face in March despite agreeing licensing conditions to change to polycarbonates a year before.
Police licensing co-ordinator Tony Cope said the woman needed stitches and glass removed from her wound.
He added: “If the venue had been operating within the boundaries of the licence the young woman would just have a bruise and headache rather than be scarred for life.”
Sgt Stuart Hudson said crimes in the past year included 16 thefts and nine assaults, including a doorman spitting on a customer, and the glassing.
Licence holder Adel El-Baghdadi, who also owns Escape nightclub in the Covered Market and a string of sandwich shops, said he never received notification of the new licence condition banning the use of glass and the manager at the time, named as Mr Manoof, was no longer employed.
Revoking the licence, committee chairman John Goddard said: “We can have no confidence that crime and disorder will not occur or be properly dealt with in the future.”
After the hearing Mr El-Bagdadhi said he planned to appeal. The club will remain open until the appeal is heard.
