HAYLEY Miller is used to showbiz glamour, high heels and make-up.

But now the Miss England contestant is preparing to rough it during a five-day charity hiking trip.

The 17-year-old, who works as an assistant at Oxford’s New Theatre, is waiting to hear if she will be a finalist in the national beauty contest.

Miss Miller, of Waynflete Road, Barton, said she was taking part in the Miss England heat because the competition was backing a charity close to her heart.

She said: “It means quite a lot to me.

“The charity that they support is Beat. One of my friends had an eating disorder and they really helped her get through it. She’s much better now.”

Miss Miller, who has lived in Oxford all her life, entered the contest’s Miss Fresh Photographic heat after being spotted by Miss England officials on the website of an online acting agency.

After entering last month, the former Cheney School pupil went to a photoshoot where officials whittled down about 70 candidates to 33 finalists.

Text voting in the heat finished yesterday. Contest judges will pick one of the women finishing in the top 10 of the public vote to go straight to the Miss England final.

Miss Miller said: “At the photoshoot I had such an amazing time and everyone was lovely.

“Now it’s all just anticipation. I really want to know what’s going to happen.”

But instead of sitting around waiting for the result, Miss Miller will be starting a 107-mile charity walk from Oxford to Weymouth with two friends — Mike Devaney, 18, of Cowley, and Scott Clark, 18, of Greater Leys — who are both soldiers in the Territorial Army, based in Abingdon.

The trio will trek from Oxford’s Carfax Tower to Weymouth’s Jubilee Clock Tower, aiming to walk about eight hours a day for five days and camping out each night.

They hope to raise about £1,000, to be shared between Beat and Help for Heroes, the charity which supports wounded servicemen and women.

Miss Miller said: “I’m a bit nervous about the walk but I think we’re definitely going to complete it, then spend some time on the beach.”

Last month, student nurse Zoe Smale, of Headington, was crowned Miss Oxfordshire. The 19-year-old will now represent the county in the Miss England final, which takes place in London on July 19 and 20.

Oxford women have a good record in the competition — with Daniella Luan, of Sandhills, and Eleanor Glynn, of Sandford, winning the title in 2002 and 2006 respectively.
