THE picture of the Morris Motors’ apprentices at their annual dinner (Memory Lane, January 12) provoked plenty of interest.
We now have the names of 10 of the young men who attended the event in the staff canteen at the Cowley factory just after the Second World War.
Among those in the picture were Doug Giles, Fred Clark, John Neale, Frank Grant, Mick Mew, Roger Moon, John Sparrowhawk, Vic Harding, Mike Inston and Owen Kernahan.
The photograph was sent in by Frank Grant, of Burford Road, Witney, who was the Apprentice of the Year in 1946-7. John Sparrowhawk won the shield in 1949.
Owen Kernahan later founded Kernahan‘s, the Witney motor dealers.
A list of all the apprentices who trained at the car factory from 1942-68 is on display at the Morris Motors’ Museum, in Long Hanborough station yard.
The museum also has many photographs of apprentice functions, plus pictures of all those who won the annual shield.
Efforts are being made to organise an apprentices’ reunion.
