WHEN Claire Thomas puts on her walking shoes at midnight next month she will know the importance of every step.

The 28-year-old will be one of 740 people taking part in the midnight walk in aid of Katharine House Hospice on July 4.

Miss Thomas, will be joined by her dad Greg, 61, partner Guy Turner, sister Debbie Mitchell, 30, and her husband Paul Mitchell, to walk 12.5 miles in memory of mum and wife Judy, 64, who died earlier this year.

For Miss Thomas and her family, the walk is more than just a challenge, it is a chance to say thank you to the hospice that cared for their loved one.

Miss Thomas, a public protection officer at Cherwell District Council, said: “We’re making a real family do of it in memory of mum.

“Mum said, whilst in Katharine House, that anything we do for charity from now on she wants us to do it for there.

“She would be really pleased.”

So keeping their word, team Thomas will join hundreds of people on the walk around Banbury.

Miss Thomas said: “We were, as weird as it sounds, lucky enough to be able to spend our last few days together in the care of Katharine House Hospice.

“Before my experience of Katharine House, I didn't really appreciate what a fantastic job they did.

“While mum was poorly at home we were all constantly terrified about what was happening and felt so alone in dealing with the cancer when the nurses had left.

“Once we were in Katharine House, not only did my mum feel safe and more comfortable, we all did.

“I can remember as I walked in on the very first day a lady said to me we would all be surrounded by one massive cuddle.

“I thought it was a bit strange at the time but now that’s the only way I would describe it to anyone who asks."”

She said before seeing the hospice for herself and meeting staff who cared for her mum she believed they were grim places, but that was proved wrong.

Miss Thomas added: “My sister and I used to laugh as we were both walking around in our slippers making mum’s visitors tea and coffee.

“In fact everyone in there was laughing and smiling and the nurses are just all angels.”
