Sir – The recent incidents of disappearing mail are cause for concern and the scale might be larger than realised.
The letter from B. Lingard (June 4) reporting items of outgoing mail which failed to reach their destination will hopefully prompt others to check that their mail has arrived safely.
One would not usually be aware if a birthday or condolence card had failed to arrive as the intended recipient would probably assume you had forgotten and would not mention it.
I have had a similar experience myself as a self-employed person when I posted my quarterly tax payment to the Inland Revenue in March, only to receive a letter from them at the end of May demanding immediate payment plus interest charges for non-payment. I sent another cheque which arrived successfully, but might need to consider making future payments online.
Post Offices are already sadly in decline and if mail is being lost in sorting offices this should be investigated urgently before people lose confidence in this admirable service.
