THE Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, joined worshippers at a church in Headington.
Dr Williams, who was visiting Oxford, was invited to preach at All Saints Church, Lime Walk, by the Rev James Cocke.
Dr Williams, a former Professor of Divinity at Oxford University, has been good friends with Mr Cocke for many years.
He gave the eulogy at the funeral of Mr Cocke’s wife Joan last June.
Mr Cocke, 83, Oxfordshire’s oldest serving vicar – and one of the longest-serving in the UK – said: “He happened to be in Oxford and didn’t have an evening service planned so I invited him along to All Saints to preach.
"He is a superb preacher and it was a great honour to have him at the church.”
