MORE than 1,500 people turned out to support a charity memorial football tournament in Witney.
Thirty-six teams took part in the six-a-side event in memory of Robert Poole, who collapsed playing football 15 years ago and died from a heart attack, aged 43.
Footballers from the Witney & District League and a team from Didcot showed off their skills on the pitch at Witney Rugby Club, in Hailey, on Saturday. It was the fifth annual tournament to be organised by Mr Poole’s son Jason.
The 32-year-old, of Ducklington Lane, said: “I’m so grateful to all my family and friends who have supported me.
“About 1,500 people turned up on the sidelines.
“It was the biggest turnout ever. It keeps getting better.
“There were no serious injuries, a couple of sprained ankles, but that comes with football.”
Mr Poole said it was not only in memory of his father but also to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.
Last year’s event raised £1,053. Mr Poole added: “I hope to beat that and raise a lot more this year.
“It means so much to me to raise money for the BHF and remember my dad.”
Supporters enjoyed a barbecue, raffle, tombola, bouncy castle and an ice cream.
