COLLEGE rowers are gearing up for a 65-mile two-day row to raise funds for a disabled charity.
A crew from Pembroke College Boat Club is rowing from Oxford to London on June 25.
Vice-captain Keith Cocks said: “The plan is to have either an eight- or four-man boat and row approximately 12 hours each day with three or four breaks each day.
“The college did it last year and it was a great success.
“Local clubs are very supportive of college clubs so it’s nice to be able to give something back.”
The college is aiming to raise £1,500.
Mr Cocks, a 20-year-old Theology student, said: “I have never rowed that far, nowhere near.
“When we train the most we go out for is two hours. This will be 12 hours each day – it will be pretty gruelling.”
But he added: “It should be a good experience and it’s nice to be able to give something back to the community.”
Half the money will pay for new storage racks and boat covers for the Oxford Adaptive Rowing Club which helps disabled people enjoy rowing.
It operates out of the City of Oxford Rowing Club, at Donnington Bridge, which lets its members use the boat club free of charge.
Club captain Rachael Lunney said: “We are very grateful. OARC needs donations to keep operating and reaching out to people with disabilities.”
To support the rowers, send a cheque to Row to London c/o Pembroke College, Oxford, OX1 1DW.
