A SCRAPBOOK belonging to the Oxford Harriers Amateur Athletic Club has come to light.
It contains dozens of newspaper cuttings of the club’s activities and other sporting events from the 1920s to the 1950s.
According to a report, in neat handwriting, in the opening pages, the Harriers were revived in 1921 after the Great War.
“The revival was undertaken by Mr J Cleary, a prominent member of the club before the war.
“In the 1921-22 cross-country season, the membership was very small, but promising members were gradually coming forward.
“The track season saw a few Harriers winning prizes and more members being signed on.”
Frank Gray, Oxford’s Liberal MP, was elected president, Mr AJ Thomas chairman, Mr J Cleary secretary, V Pipkin captain and L Welch vice-captain.
The report proudly revealed that at the end of the season, the Harriers had competed in nine inter-club cross-country runs and won seven.
On the track, they were equally successful.
“Members of the Oxford Harriers did very well at the various athletic meetings and consequently the membership continued increasing.
“The following prizes were won by Harriers - 14 firsts, 19 seconds and six thirds.“ Any memories of the Harriers? Let me know.
