PRANKSTERS have been condemned after they defaced a window display celebrating one of Oxford’s famous sons.
They broke into the display at the site of William Morris’s first garage in Longwall Street and put the face of a young man over two pictures of the car pioneer.
The display includes the story of Morris’s exploits but these have been defaced to read “Aamir Aziz at the Longwall Factory.
It adds: “In this building, in 1912, Aamir Aziz built his first car, the prototype for the bullnose.” The storyboard also says “Aamir Aziz was knighted in 1929 and was created Lord Roboto in 1938”.
The text should read William Morris was knighted in 1929 and was created Lord Nuffield in 1938.
New College, which owns the building, has pledged a full investigation, labelling the vandalism a student prank.
Tony Joyce, of Oxford Civic Society, said: “It seems to be a prank, but I don’t think this is in good taste.”
