I read the reports of our local MPs’ expenses (Oxford Mail, May 12). I bet you a sovereign to a hayseed if constituents were to pay their MPs’ expenses, the decimal point in their final amount would jump a couple of places to the left.
The poet and one-time MP, Hillaire Belloc, wrote these lines at the funeral of a prominent parliamentarian of the day: ‘Here, with great pomp and ridiculous display The politician’s corpse has laid away When his friends and colleagues Had all jeered and harangued I wept; For I had longed to see him hanged’.
