A SUB-POSTMASTER who was suspended over an administrative error has handed in his notice.
Pete Hiscock, 62, said he was treated like a “little kid” after an audit picked up the error at his post office in Charlbury.
He was suspended for a month on Thursday, May 21. After a meeting with Post Office managers yesterday, he resigned.
Mr Hiscock, of Church Street, Charlbury, said: “I feel I was treated like a little kid, spanked and told off and suspended and I feel ‘do I want I work for a company like that?’ “They now have computers to see exactly what I do – it’s really bad.
“At the end of the day, I’m getting on for retirement.
“I know all the people in Charlbury support me, but if I do go back, I will only be there for two-and-a-half years until I retire.”
Mr Hiscock, who has never had a holiday during the 12 years he has run the town’s post office, received more than 100 cards of support from residents, who also started a petition to get him reinstated.
He added: “At the end of the day, you have got to think of yourself.”
A temporary manager is running the branch and will stay on for another month.
A Post Office spokesman said: “The situation remains unchanged – following a routine audit on Thursday, May 21, the sub-postmaster was precautionarily suspended, pending further inquiries.
“The post office is open with an interim sub-postmaster in charge.”
