DOZENS of motorbikes roared into Ambrosden in convoy to kick start a family fun day.

About 200 people turned out to enjoy the sunshine and a host of activities at the village’s community centre.

Families also got the opportunity to make a splash as the nearby swimming pool also opened its doors.

Children took part in traditional games including splat the rat and tombola, and were entertained by balloon modeller Mr Cheese.

Organiser Lynn Waite, of Bicester Garrison Army Welfare Service, said the event was opened to the whole community.

She said: “The day went very well. The bikes came in convoy from the garden centre — the noise was incredible.”

The bikers also had another reason to make the trip from Somerset to Bicester — they were bringing packages which will be sent to soldiers from 23 Pioneer Regiment serving in Afghanistan.

Elsewhere the day also marked the official opening of a £70,000 play area for children. Ms Waite has been fundraising for more then two years to pay for the much needed park to be built.

She got grants from the Big Lottery, the Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment and £20,000 from the Army.

Opened by garrison commander Colonel John Lewis, the former scrubland includes swings, rockers, a basket swing for disabled children, a seesaw and fixed skateboard.

All the proceeds from the event yesterday will go towards the Ambrosden Summer Playscheme, which provides free activities for children during the summer break.

Ms Waite said: “The idea is for respite for mums when husbands are away doing a tour of duty.

“At this time it is quite important for them.”

The playscheme is also open to the whole community. Children take part in a host of activities, including days out, craft making and Energize events.
