AN OFF-DUTY policewoman has been praised for coming to the aid of a woman being attacked in Abingdon.
At about 3am yesterday, a 20-year-old woman was walking along Marcham Road, near the Four Pillars Hotel, in the direction of the A34, when she was approached by a man and sexually assaulted.
The officer was driving through the area and saw the woman in distress. She called in colleagues and a man was arrested.
Vale of White Horse police commander Chf Insp Andy Boyd said: “Fortunately an off-duty officer was driving past when she noticed a woman in distress.
“She stopped and realised that the woman needed help. She called the police while staying with the woman, reassured her, and directed her working colleagues to the possible offender.
“This police officer has demonstrated a high level of professionalism, exemplary dedication and commitment to her work, both on duty and off.”
Police spokesman Claire Gourlay said: “There were other motorists who would have driven past at this time and we urge anyone who saw the woman to get in touch.”
Information can be given to police via 08458 505 505 or by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
A 34-year-old man arrested at the scene has been released on bail.
