ROYAL Mail tonight suspended the delivery of Your Oxford - the city council’s quarterly newspaper - after British National Party leaflets were inserted into the publication and posted through letter boxes.

The company said it had a legal obligation to deliver political pamphlets but admitted they should not have been posted inside the newspaper.

Residents in East Oxford, Headington and Cowley have reported receiving BNP, UK Independence Party and Green Party leaflets folded inside their Your Oxford every day this week.

Roger Moreton, from East Oxford, said: “This sort of thing should not be delivered together with a city council publication.”

Royal Mail spokesman Tom Prendergast said the leaflets should not have been combined with another customer’s mail and apologised. But last night he refused to say whether Royal Mail was investigating how the leaflets came to be inserted into Your Oxford or who was to blame.

City council Louisa Dean said: “Royal Mail staff have either inserted certain election leaflets or delivered these leaflets in a manner which suggests they are connected to our publication.

“There is absolutely no connection between Your Oxford and any party political material. Immediately we became aware of the issue we contacted Royal Mail.

“In spite of this, it is clear that combined deliveries have continued.

“We asked Royal Mail to provide an absolute assurance this practice would cease with immediate effect, or to discontinue all delivery of Your Oxford until further notice.”
