More than 75 drivers were caught breaking the law during police checks in south Oxfordshire.

During a two-hour check in The Street, Crowmarsh Gifford, yesterday 23 drivers were issued with Fixed Penalty Notices for exceeding the 30mph speed limit. A further 25 drivers were stopped for not wearing seatbelts and four for driving while using a mobile phone.

In another check yesterday on the A417 in Harwell, 25 drivers were stopped for exceeding the speed limit. The fastest speed recorded was 50mph in the 30mph restricted zone.

Around 60 per cent of the drivers exchanged their Fixed Penalties Notices for roadside education from Oxfordshire County Council road safety officers.

The check was part of the ongoing Operation Pride road safety campaign, led by PC Mark Pilling, who said “This latest round of checks shows that motorists continue to ignore road safety laws in place for their own and others’ safety.

"We will continue a campaign of enforcement and education across Oxfordshire to spread these important road safety messages.”
