MASTERCHEF judge Gregg Wallace cooked up some lunchtime delights for one lucky couple and their guests.
Frances Slade, 71, entered an online competition which asked her to submit a recipe to be in with a chance to get it cooked for her. She submitted her own recipe of belly pork casserole and promptly forgot about her entry.
However a few months later she received an email to say she was one of the winners of the online competition, which was organised by Meat Matters.
Last week, Gregg Wallace, a judge and co-host on the BBC show MasterChef, went to her home at Court Farm, Hook Norton, and cooked his version of the meal. Mrs Slade was joined by husband Richard and three friends. She said: “It was wonderful – and food always tastes better after someone else has cooked for you.
“I was banned from helping and even banned from washing up. He was very clean and tidy.”
Mrs Slade came up with the recipe idea to get rid of belly pork in her freezer.
She said: “We have kept pigs for years and the belly pork was always at the bottom of the freezer. I thought ‘I must do something with it.’ “I wanted to tart it up a bit so I smothered it in French mustard, and put it in a casserole with lots of vegetables and a gravy and slow cooked it.
“This is a really tasty, cost-effective dish — brilliant for cold, winter days. It’s easy to prepare and the cooking smells are wonderful.
“The kids, when they visit, always ask for it — it’s their favourite dish.”
Mr Wallace’s version saw him smother just one side of the meat, roasting it and adding vegetables before putting it in the casserole.
He got involved in the competition after finding out the results of a survey, which showed 33 per cent of people had never helped prepare the family meal and 29 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds didn’t see the value of a family meal.
Mrs Slade’s recipe and others have been made into a book.
Mr Wallace said: “This generation is missing out on those traditional recipes we loved as children.
“The Family Favourites booklet is a must-have for anyone wanting to get the family back together around the dinner table.”
