AN Abingdon schoolboy was crowned the winner of a national film competition.

Pierre Leveque, 15, a student at Abingdon School, was awarded £250 after winning the under-15 age group of the National Young Filmmakers Award in Leeds.

He spent a year making Oh No My Dog – a four-and-a-half-minute animation about a dog who chased a ball out of a high-rise flat window and injured himself.

In order to heal him three friends must raise £50,000 for his veterinary treatment. The film features the trio busking in a park and entering a talent contest to raise the funds.

Pierre, of Burcott Park, Burcott, who beat 10 finalists in his age group, said: “I didn’t think I would win, but it feels amazing.”

The youngster spent several hours after school and at weekends making the film.

Pierre said: “You have to see the film to see why it is called Oh No My Dog.

“I really enjoyed making it. I’ve always loved animations and it was great to receive the recognition from the Leeds Film Festival.”

The National Young Filmmakers Award, which ran from April 2 to April 10, showcased new filmmaking talent in the UK.

Film entries were divided into two sections – documentary and fiction – and two age groups, under-15 and 15-19.

In recognition of Pierre’s hard work, his secondary school, in Park Road, announced his achievement during a recent assembly.

He then screened the film, which features the voices of school friends Charlie Beirouli and Evan Westenbrink, to his tutor group.

His parents, Michele and Nicholas, said they were extremely proud of his achievement.

Pierre is now making a second film called Phantasmagoria.
