Viking warriors marched into Oxfordshire with a longship in tow.
The ship, which was launched on the River Thames at Oxford on Saturday, was rowed downstream to Abingdon for Sutton Courtenay’s annual Vicar’s Fun Day on the village green on Sunday.
Re-enactment group Regia Anglorum recalled the 1009 raid on Oxford, when vikings set fire to the city, by staging a mock battle between Vikings and Saxons, at the village’s Norman Hall Paddock.
Villager Sally Hoodless, 30, said hundreds of people turned out to inspect the ship and its fearsome crew.
She said: “It was a great day. There were a lot of people who came to look at the ship and talk to the vikings – though the battle was a bit scary!”
All proceeds from the event, which included a tug-of-war, will fund community projects.
