Thames Valley Police and the Safer Roads Partnership teamed up to support a Europe-wide road safety week, stopping more than 380 drivers across the region.

Thames Valley Police’s five Road Safety Constables joined forces, and worked alongside roads policing officers in the week April 20-24, to carry out speed checks across the force area as part of a Europe-wide campaign.

Checks were carried out in different locations each day, resulting in 382 drivers being stopped for driving in excess of the speed limit.

Checks in Oxfordshire were carried out in Botley, Wroxton, Watlington and on the A40 at Milton Common and a total of 132 drivers were stopped.

A high proportion of these drivers took the option of having roadside education from a local authority road safety officer.

Police said the remaining drivers, who were driving too fast to be eligible for education or declined the option, were given Fixed Penalty Notices of £60 and a three-point endorsement on their licences.

A number of other drivers were stopped for driving licence and seatbelt offences and for driving unroadworthy vehicles.

Road Safety Sergeant Chris Appleby said: “Unfortunately we caught far too many people exceeding the speed limit.

“We will continue a campaign of education and enforcement to drive home the message to motorists that speed kills.”
