I have my doubts about the new 20mph speed limit in Oxford.

We are told it is to reduce accidents, but increased congestion is bound to lead to frayed tempers, boredom and less concentration.

We are told we must reduce carbon emissions but cars dawdling along in second and third gear will mean more emissions and for longer periods. In the main, car technology is not compatible for 20mph.

We are told the measure will encourage people to make fewer car journeys, but I am not sure it will live up to expectations.

It would be interesting to know, a few years down the line, how many accidents have been prevented.
