Tonight marks the start of the annual Oxford Film Festival, now in its third successful year, and to celebrate the Phoenix Picturehouse cinema in Walton Street will be screening a series that salutes the genius of the Coen Brothers.

Sponsored by the Oxford Mail (turn up for any festival film with that day’s Oxford Mail and get in for half price), the festival kicks off tonight with Blood Simple (18), their breakthrough film. It continues through to the Oscar-laden No Country For Old Men (15) on Friday May 15.

Other highlights include Raising Arizona (15) on May 10, Fargo (18) on May 11, The Big Lebowski (18) on May 12, The Hudsucker Proxy (PG) on May 13 and O Brother, and Where Art Thou? (12) on May 14.

Screening times will be 9pm each evening.

Suzy Sheriff, manager of the Phoenix cinema, said: “Everyone loves the Coens – their films are a brilliant mix of the laugh-out-loud funny, the incredibly violent, and the good old-fashioned feel-good variety. I can’t wait...”
