CHILDREN joined in songs and poetry for the relaunch of a library at an Oxford school.

About £5,000 has been spent on revamping the library at New Marston Primary School with new fixtures and fittings, new books, and a new checking-out system.

To mark the occasion, children’s poet James Carter, author of Time Travelling Underpants, Wild, and Cars, Stars, Electric Guitars, joined classes at the school for a day of workshops and performances — accompanied by his guitar. He is pictured with library prefects Jordan Virrill, left, and Joshua Mejia, both 10.

Librarian Kim Waring-Paynter said: “It went brilliantly.

“The children all had a really fantastic day and James Carter did workshops throughout the day as well as a really zany performance for pupils.”

Joshua, whose favourite books are adventure stories, said: “It was a lot of fun.”

Jordan added: “It was pretty cool and pretty fun.”

Joshua and Jordan, who will check out the books to their classmates, have already put more than 600 books on the new checking-out system.

Mrs Waring-Paynter also said the new library management system meant teachers could track what children were reading and how often, so they could suggest other titles.
