REGARDING the naming of Didcot’s town square, and suggestions it should be named after Brunel – Brunel only came to Didcot after the land owners of Abingdon refused his railway, so he had to use land no one wanted, then known as Didcot Marsh.
I am an admirer of Brunel’s achevments, but he did not want to be in Didcot. He actually had his headquarters in Steventon.
The name Orchard Centre was used by the developers because they obtained the orchard originally owned by the Stones family butchers, of Lower Broadway.
The present shape of the area between the cinema and the Cornerstone Arts Centre is not geometric, so the name Stones Place would be appropriate, and maintain a historic link with Didcot’s past.
