WE PUBLISHED half the panoramic picture of pupils and staff at East Oxford School in 1965 (Memory Lane, March 30). This is the second section.
The picture was sent in by David Martin, of Egerton Road, Headington, whose father Bill was headmaster for 23 years. It was the only school he worked at in a career spanning almost 50 years.
After training at Culham College, he joined the staff of East Oxford Boys’ School, during the long headship of EA Greening Lamborn, known as Ikey.
Mr Martin became head when the boys and girls schools were merged in 1948 to form the new East Oxford Secondary School. He held the post until 1971.
Two years later, the school was closed when the city adopted a three-tier education system.
David Martin tells me: “My father was proud of the fact that in 1971 when he retired, there had been only four headmasters – and one of those was for only four years.”
Do you recognise yourself in the picture above? Any memories of the school to share?
