An ironmongery store which can trace its history back 140 years has reopened in its traditional home. Champion and Co of Wallingford has return to its premises in St Mary’s Street after undergoing a £100,000 refurbishment. General manager Kevin Willis said: “It has taken three months because it is a listed building and we wanted to retain its character.
“So we have kept aspects such as the traditional wooden floor, drawers and cabinets but have added new fixtures, fittings and lighting.”
Champion and Co dates back to 1869 when it was opened by Thomas Champion, who forged horseshoes in the shop as well as selling hardware.
It was bought by Richard Rowse, owner of Pettits department store, in the town in 2005. The expanded range will include a wider range of small electrical items as well as more accessories for the home.
Much of the work has taken place above the shop, converting the space into three flats. The business has continued to trade in temporary premises in St Mary’s Street and all 10 staff, some of whom have been with the business more than 20 years, are carrying on.
