I have just heard that Oxford County Council has passed a motion for a 20mph speed limit for Oxfordshire, as it thinks it will make the city a safer place and reduce fatal accidents.
I do not agree. There are more pedestrians and cars about now with the whole country over-populated. Of course there are going to be more accidents – but it has got nothing to do with speed.
All a 20mph speed limit will do is cause more traffic jams and pollution. What is needed is for people to be more alert.
Accidents are caused more by bad drivers and people crossing roads and not concentrating enough, than speed.
A limit of 30 mph is not fast and modern cars can stop in a much shorter distance so there is nothing wrong with 30mph limits. In fact, they could be upped to 40mph to keep congestion and pollution down.
