ARTISTS, schoolchildren and other residents have created more than 150 angels to celebrate the centenary of a North Oxford church.
St Michael and All Angels Church, in Summertown commissioned four professional artists to create the angels, which are being hung in the church’s south transept.
Over the past two months, artists including Claire Christie Sadler, Judie Waldmann and Wren Hughes organised 16 workshops to make the “flying” angels.
The church, in Lonsdale Road, was built by subscription by the people of Summertown 100 years ago.
Judie Waldmann said: “The idea is to get people from different parts of the community to come to the church, when they might not usually consider coming here.
“I think it’s a very nice way of marking the centenary — we thought it was a good idea to put all the angels in the south transept, because it’s a very big church and otherwise they might have looked a bit lost.
“Pupils from Cuttleslowe Primary School and Cherwell School were very enthusiastic about being part of this project and we are very grateful to them.
Claire Christie Sadler, who also attends the church, added: “It has been a fantastic project and one woman enjoyed it so much she came back three times. Pupils have brought their parents along to show them the angels we have made.”
The angel installation will be open to the public during Oxford City Artweeks from noon to 2pm from Saturday, May 9, until Sunday, May 17.
