The Thames Valley Police Mounted Section has got a new recruit.
Otto is a 12-year-old thoroughbred and Irish draught cross who was purchased from a dealer in Oxfordshire. He was previously used for showjumping.
The bay gelding stands 17.2 hands high and will be trained by PC Louisa Watson.
PC Watson said: “Otto has settled in quickly to his new role, having been slowly introduced into the various aspects of mounted police work. He has attended public order training and nuisance training which includes exposing the horses to smoke and fire.
“So far he has been involved in the policing of a visit of Prime Minister Gordon Brown to Oxford, a TUC demonstration and three football matches.
“He is a kind natured horse who is well liked by all members of the public who have met him during his day to day patrols around Thames Valley Police area supporting neighbourhood initiatives”.
Sgt John Thurston said: “Otto is a welcome addition to the section and brings the number of horses up to nine. We are currently looking to bring in one more new addition in the near future.”
