Sir – Every year we have the debate over closing Magdalen Bridge on May Morning to prevent revellers jumping into the river, but to me the solution seems simple.

Looking over the parapet one evening, I saw a large number of punts moored just below the bridge on one side of the road.

The obvious solution is to moor punts both north and south of the bridge. Problem solved — only an idiot would jump off a bridge on to a load of punts.

Mind you, there are a lot of idiots out there!
