THERE is no doubt Sunday’s pitch invasion at the Kassam left a sour taste in the mouth.

But the worst thing that could happen as a result would be if the incident is dismissed as a storm in a teacup.

There is no doubt the pitiful days of football hooliganism are dwindling – and for that we should be all grateful.

Unfortunately, there are still groups of mindless idiots who could not give a damn about sport.

Their main aim is to get as sozzled as possible and behave like monkeys. A later kick-off clearly gave them more time at the bar.

The reaction of loyal United fans as they marauded onto the pitch proved that most condemned the action.

It spoilt a carnival atmosphere and almost certainly disrupted the team’s momentum as they looked to score a crucial second goal.

Now the club is considering calling for anyone collared to be banned from future matches.

Club officials are scouring CCTV and pictures with police officers.

The Oxford Mail believes this isn’t an overreaction, supports the call and congratulates the club on taking such quick action.

It may seem to be a rather draconian measure, but these morons need to be treated like schoolchildren.

Boss Chris Wilder and team are doing a great job to bring back the fans.

Hopefully, the enthusiasm they are generating will continue next season.

A ferocious, but family-orientated atmosphere is exactly what is needed.

However, at the moment, it is a shame a bumper crowd will generally also attract a sizeable number of fools as well.
