Oxfordshire’s spell in the top flight of British darts is over after one season.
They needed to win their ninth and final fixture away to Glamorgan to stay in the Premier Division, but crashed to a 25-11 defeat, which means they go back to Division 1 next season.
Once again, it was the all-important finishing that let Oxon down.
No fewer than 15 of the games were decided 3-2 and Oxon won only three of them as they found that winning double in the fifth leg so elusive.
Glamorgan, the leading lights of Welsh darts, fielded six internationals – four men, two ladies – and were just too powerful for Oxon.
The writing was on the wall for the visitors after Saturday, which ended with two defeats.
The ladies B team lost 5-1, with the only success coming from Sandra Cox, while the men’s B went down 9-3.
Wes Topley, man-of-the-match Les Radford (27.11) and Sean Holley – his fourth win in a row – were their victors.
On Sunday, the ladies A side drew 3-3 with wins coming from lady-of-the-match Louise Carroll (25.05), Linda Jones and Rachel Dixon.
Oxon’s men’s A were beaten 8-4, with wins coming from Nick Cobb, man-of-the-match Dennis Smith (32.67) , Keith Bedding and Pete Hall (25.91).
Outstanding on the day was Glamorgan’s Wayne Warren, with a stunning average of 37.58 against Ronnie Anderson.
Oxon were left to reflect on what might have been if theycould have improved their finishing, which would have seen them in the top half of the table.
Manager Graham Manning said: “It was the one match we really needed to compete in, but it didn’t happen for us.”
