THE results of the Israeli elections are discouraging for any hope of peace in the Middle East.
There are no signs of optimism at all. Benjamin Netanyahu, is against giving up illegally occupied land and in favour of expanding illegal settlements on that land. Alongside his American neo-conservative allies, he was the first to come up with the racist idea of “clash of civilisation” during the mid 1990s.
It is hardly surprising, given that he grew up in a house loyal to the Revisionist movement which demanded that Britain’s promise to create a Jewish homeland in Palestine in 1917 should be revised to include Jordan as well.
More importantly, the Revisionist movement, which later became Herut and then the Likud Party, had some tendencies towards the fascist movement of Italy during the Second World War. Some other revisionists were admirers of Hitler’s extreme Nationalism, they only resented his anti-Semitism.
