AS WELL as Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Germany, Greece, and Georgia, St George is the patron saint of Moscow and Ethiopia. So it is appropriate that Archbishop John Sentamu of York called for St George to be identified with the multi-cultural aspects of England.
Coming up on May 25 will be St Aldhelm’s Day, when people from Oxfordshire can celebrate the patron saint of Wessex. This is the 1300th anniversary of the saint’s death, which makes it special.
The occasion will be marked by church services and by the display of St Aldhelm flags, which have a white cross on a red background.
