ONCE again I read the view of D Rothery on the demise of Morris Motors and his attack on the Left (Oxford Mail, April 4).

I have to say his views are only a repeat version of his letters of August 1 and 26, 2008, adequately replied to by Bert Edmunds – the contents of which Mr Rothery has again chosen to ignore.

I would remind Mr Rothery that it is a fair bet that he and those of similar thinking grabbed the improvements in the wages and conditions he received while employed at Cowley.

Improvements such as the pension scheme, improved holiday entitlement, shorter working week, and sick pay, were all won by trade union organisations with the help of trade union sponsored MPs.

History tells me that the Spanish Civil War was fought for the greater part by the Left and the Communists.

Perhaps if there had been a different outcome in Spain, the Second World War might not have happened and he would not have had to be part of the invasion of Normandy, and the stevedores would not have been on a go-slow.

I would also remind him that because of council house sales, public housing stock almost disappeared.

Perhaps if Mrs Thatcher had not pursued this policy with such vigour then we would have the housing stock to accommodate a million plus homeless people in our country.
